The book comes with its own wrench, hammer, and screwdriver for young mechanics to use as they participate in the story.

The book's action incorporates the participation of the reader, asking him or her to help McQueen in the pit crew.

The reader can:
Use the screwdriver to tighten some loose screws before the race starts.
Use the wrench to loosen and tighten the lug nuts when McQueen needs a tire change.
Use the hammer to pound out some dents when McQueen bumps into the wall toward the end of the race.

Play-a-Sound: The World of Cars, Welcome to the Pit Crew has the following features that help engage pre-readers:
Buttons to press in order to hear Lightning's engine rev and other race day sounds.
A screw, a bolt, and a pounding surface on which to use the toy screwdriver, wrench, and hammer all of which make appropriate working noises.
Elastic straps that attach the tools to the book when they are not in use so they don t get lost.

My 3 year old adores this book
This kept my daughter occupied for an hour on a nine hour flight. Too noisy for a library, but not so noisy that you couldn't take it to a restaurant or on a plane. The tools are the real thrill here. The story is virtually meaningless if you haven't seen the movie (which we haven't).
