From the Publisher:
In nature, we often hear the sound of a bird or an animal before we can see it. Our new Hear and There Books have the same effect. After reading a short riddle, children are asked "What am I?" By pushing a color-coded button on the sound strip, they can hear the call of the bird or the animal. When they pull the tab on the right page, the animal is revealed. To find out more about the featured bird or animal, readers can lift the flap on the left-hand page for more detailed information on its habitat, its young, and its behavior. Written by a professional naturalist, these books are beautifully illustrated, fun to listen to, and filled with interesting facts!

From the critics
A:Publishers Weekly
Youngsters can hear, see and learn which creature is singing in Frank Gallo's two new books, both illus. by Lori Lohstoeter. In Bird Calls, with one bird per spread, aspiring bird watchers can venture a guess from the clue given ("I show up in the spring/ with my reddish breast/ and like to pull worms from the ground" is the hint for robin), then push a button to hear its sound, pull a tab to see the singer and lift a flap to learn more. The bold paintings of the Black-Capped Chickadee and the Red-Winged Blackbird in their natural surroundings are standouts. A similar format offers clues to nocturnal animals in Night Sounds, which includes a coyote, a spring peeper and a great horned owl.

B:Children's Literature
Winged creatures fill both the sky and Frank Gallo's engaging Bird Calls. Lori Lohstoeter provides full-color illustrations of eight birds in their natural habitats. Kids can press a small tab and hear each bird's sound, pull a tab to see the hidden bird, and lift a flap to learn more about it. Familiar birds such as cardinals, chickadees, and robins are included. Youngsters will enjoy looking at and listening to the book and then spotting feathered friends outside.
